How to refurbish your kitchen

We recently refurbished the kitchen within the Potton Show House inside the National Self-Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon. We see many clients whose desire it is to have a beautifully styled refurbished kitchen or to add a stunning new kitchen to their new build home, and so we have documented our own journey, during exactly that project, in the perfectly formed Potton House.

The successful design of any kitchen is always in the details and making the very best use of the space you have available. It is always to consider the flow of the property and how you will achieve great working and social areas within the design. Finally the layout of the kitchen in conjunction with your appliance needs and locations will ensure you make the very best of your layout and achieve maximum functionality.

Worktops

We chose these kitchen worktops for their incredible style impact and high performance. The island top is by Corian, in ‘Hazelnut’ and the back sink run and back splash is from the Dekton XGlass range in ‘Halo’. Both Corian and Dekton are perfectly suited to the kitchen environment and offer varying resistance to physical and thermal damage, generally more so than natural granite and marble and are even available in look-a-like luxurious finishes, giving the effect of those opulent stones.

The flooring

The floor we chose is from the QuickStep range and is called Autumn Oak, Warm Grey (Vinyl PUCP40089). QuickStep is a ‘luxury vinyl’, boasting superior performance in a five layer product. Each layer has a particular purpose, from a high performance top layer – protecting your flooring from scratching and stains, to a highly efficient impact resistant base layer – resisting moisture and balancing your original floor to prevent cupping and warping.

The appliances

Kitchen appliances and making the best use of technology is our passion. All the appliances in this year’s Potton House are by Siemens. We have installed a combination oven and microwave (HM678G4S6B), a beautiful combination steam oven (CS858RGS1B) a flexi-induction hob (KI34NP6GB) a 12 place-setting dishwasher (SN678D00TG) and the all-important ceiling extractor. If that doesn’t mean much to you, come along and have a look for yourself and we’ll explain the nuances that will become every day simplicity after installation! For example, the flexi-induction hob is one cooking area that can be divided into the more traditional cooking ‘rings’ or zones as Siemens calls them, or combined to make any number of more useful cooking zones.

The wood effect items

Introducing natural elements into the kitchen can help to bring the influence of outdoors into the home. This feature is one we like to employ to bring light, calm and texture into the heart of the home. The door main finishes are (Plain) Monza Light Grey Matt and (Wood) Abstract Grey Bardolino Oak, in both vertical and horizontal options.

The lighting

The pendant lights are from a range of German manufactured lighting that are exclusive to J&S House of Design. The coloured effects are from state of the art LED lighting, which we tell you more about in another blog!
